The Jefferson Mustangs's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Wednesday after their 11th straight loss. The New Year welcomed they with a 56-22 whooping from Brackenridge. While losing is never fun, Jefferson can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 1338th, while Brackenridge is ranked 666th).
Destiny Duenas was Jefferson's leading scorer, having posted six points.
Jesenia Villanueva held things down on the boards with eight rebounds. She took the lead distributing the ball, coming up with two assists.
Brackenridge's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Alasia Brown led the charge by dropping a double-double on 22 points and 13 rebounds. That makes it 15 consecutive games in which Brown has scored at least 25% of Brackenridge's points. Layla Galvan was another key contributor, scoring 19 points along with six rebounds and five steals.
Jefferson has been struggling recently, as they've lost 14 of their last 15 matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-20 record this season. As for Brackenridge, the win got them back to even at 12-12.
Jefferson will head out on the road to face off against Sam Houston at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Brackenridge, they will look to defend their home court on Friday against Lanier at 6:30 p.m. Lanier is hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.
