The Connersville Spartans will be taking part in a tournament against the Hagerstown Tigers at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Connersville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.9 runs per game this season.
Things were looking good for Connersville after they put the first run on the board on Friday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell just short of Greensburg by a score of 5-4.
Connersville saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Maggie Spurlock, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.
Meanwhile, Hagerstown waltzed into their contest on Thursday with seven straight wins... but they left with eight. They never let the Knights get on the board and left with a 3-0 win. The Tigers' pitching crew has been rock solid lately; the team hasn't given up a run in their last three matches.
Not much got past Rylan Young, who gave up just four hits and racked up 16 Ks to keep Northeastern off the board. Young has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in 12 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Mackenzee Johnson, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and three runs. She is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last four games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Allison Stinson, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one RBI.
Hagerstown hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Northeastern struck out 16 times.
Hagerstown's victory was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 14-1. As for Connersville, their defeat ended a nine-game streak of away wins and brought them to 16-9.
Saturday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Connersville hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .382. However, it's not like Hagerstown struggles in that department as they've averaged .386. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
