2A/1A Northwest recap Oct. 16, 2012
Colby Chilton and Kenyon Martin provided fans with a highlight when they connected against North Surry. The connection was good for 74 yards, the longest such play in 2A/1A Northwest this season.
West Stokes was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from seventh to fifth in the league. Earlier in the week, the Wildcats triumphed over the Wildcats 35-9.
North Stokes's dynamic duo of Garrett Wood and Dustin Smith proved tough for East Surry to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Wood threw for 364 yards and one touchdown and Smith had 201 yards receiving. Matthew Hopkins helped North Stokes' passing attack out by catching eight balls for 115 yards.
Zach Koons was the most productive running back in the league this week. In 29 carries, he ran for 107 yards as the Cardinals fell to the Cardinals. Teammate Jon Dickenson added to the ground attack by rushing for 89 yards.
North Stokes' Wood and Hopkins have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading 2A/1A Northwest in both passing and receiving yards. Wood has thrown for 2206 yards this season, while Hopkins, a 6-foot-0 receiver, has 55 catches for 785 yards. South Stokes's Jacquan Martin leads the league in rushing yards with 1573.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Mount Airy takes on second place South Stokes. Mount Airy defeated Bishop McGuinness last week, while the Sauras bested West Stokes.

The Bears extended the longest winning streak in the league this week by beating Bishop McGuinness, 31-12. The victory was the eighth in a row for the team.
