Basketball Recap: St. Petersburg Sets Scoring Season-High Against Academy of the Holy Names

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask St. Petersburg). They blew past the Academy of the Holy Names Jaguars, posting a 70-33 win. Given the Green Devils' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 135th, while the Jaguars are ranked 287th), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.

St. Petersburg's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Shaw Summer led the charge by dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds. Summer is also on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted three or more in the last four games she's played. Ella Abernethy was another key player, going 6 for 7 on her way to 15 points.

St. Petersburg was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Academy of the Holy Names only racked up seven assists.

Several Jaguars players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Gabriella Teixeira, who posted ten points. The dominant performance also gave Teixeira a new career-high in blocks (two). Bella DiLuciano was another key player, putting up two points and three blocks.

St. Petersburg's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 9-4. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.3 points per game. As for Academy of the Holy Names, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 7-9.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Petersburg will challenge Calvary Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. Calvary Christian will roll in looking for their tenth straight win, something St. Petersburg surely won't give up without a fight. As for Academy of the Holy Names, a feisty cat fight will be fought when the Academy of the Holy Names Jaguars face off against the Bell Creek Academy Panthers at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Bell Creek Academy has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
