Edcouch-Elsa is 0-8 against Harlingen South since February of 2017 but things could change on Friday. The Yellowjackets will take on the Hawks at 6:30 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Edcouch-Elsa 3.8, Harlingen South 1.6) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Edcouch-Elsa's usually-dominant pitching crew will be looking to make up for Tuesday's struggle, when Weslaco East hitters got past them. The Yellowjackets lost 10-4 to the Wildcats on Tuesday. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Yellowjackets have suffered since March 19, 2024.
Edcouch-Elsa saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Melody Soto, who scored two runs while going 2-for-4.
Meanwhile, Harlingen South fought the good fight in their extra-innings game against Mercedes on Tuesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Tigers by a score of 7-6. The Hawks' defeat signaled the end of their six-game winning streak.
Lexi Sandoval was huge no matter where she played even without the win. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring two runs while going 4-for-5.
In other batting news, Kara Jensen made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored a run while going 1-for-4. Georgia Chapa also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
Edcouch-Elsa's loss dropped their record down to 14-5. As for Harlingen South, their defeat dropped their record down to 13-5.
Friday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Edcouch-Elsa hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .328. However, it's not like Harlingen South struggles in that department as they've averaged .343. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Edcouch-Elsa might still be hurting after the 10-0 loss they got from Harlingen South in their previous matchup back in March. Will the Yellowjackets have more luck at home instead of on the road?
