The Hermon Hawks will venture away from home to face off against the Ellsworth Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Hermon will be looking to extend their current five-game winning streak.
Hermon had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the ten-run drubbing they dealt Mount Desert Island on Tuesday. The Hawks never let the Trojans get on the board and left with a 10-0 win. Considering the Hawks have won four contests by more than nine runs this season, Tuesday's blowout was nothing new.
Mikelle Verrill made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits over five innings pitched. She has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Addy Waning was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one home run and two RBI. Leah Walker also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Ellsworth came out on top against John Bapst Memorial on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run fourth inning. The Eagles blew past the Crusaders 9-1.
Ellsworth secured the victory behind a pair of hitters. One of them was Maddie Damon, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Another was Jasmine Emerton, who got on base in two of her three plate appearances with one run and one RBI.
Hermon pushed their record up to 6-1 with the win, which was their fourth straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.5 runs on average over those games. As for Ellsworth, the win was their first on the road , bumping their record up to 3-4.
Ellsworth's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Hermon hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .387. It's a different story for Ellsworth, though, as they've only averaged .255. Will they be able to contain Hermon's hitters?
Everything went Hermon's way against Ellsworth in their previous meeting two weeks ago, as Hermon made off with a 10-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
