Archbishop McCarthy is on a three-game streak of home wins, while Mater Academy Charter is on a three-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Mavericks will host the Lions at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
On Friday, Archbishop McCarthy needed a bit of extra time to put away Somerset Academy. They sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the Panthers. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mavericks have posted since April 7, 2025.
Derek Winchester made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing 3.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and one double. Those three RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other pitching news, Felipe Benitez tossed a big game, pitching five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits.

Meanwhile, Mater Academy Charter hadn't done well against Columbus recently (they were 0-7 in their previous seven matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Thursday. The Lions had just enough and edged out the Explorers 5-4. That's two games straight that the Lions have won by just one run.
Steven Gonzalez looked comfortable as he pitched three innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Dylan Fernandez, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run. The team also got some help courtesy of Andre Suarez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one run and one RBI.
Archbishop McCarthy now has a winning record of 4-3. As for Mater Academy Charter, their win bumped their record up to 7-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Archbishop McCarthy has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Mater Academy Charter struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.2 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Archbishop McCarthy might still be hurting after the 11-5 loss they got from Mater Academy Charter in their previous matchup back in February of 2025.
