The Ashwaubenon Jaguars will square off against the Bay Port Pirates at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Ashwaubenon fought the good fight in their extra-innings match against Sheboygan North on Thursday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Golden Raiders by a score of 5-4.
Owen Amenson was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out seven batters over 4.2 innings while giving up three earned runs off only two hits. Those two hits allowed gave him a new career-low.
On the hitting side, Ashwaubenon saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hayden Thomas, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Bay Port waltzed into their game on Wednesday with six straight wins... but they left with seven. They didn't even let the Redwings on the board, marking their second-straight 10-0 shutout.
Jake Olson looked comfortable as he struck out six batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Jack Huben was excellent, going a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBI and one run. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Drew Bruckner, who got on base in two of his three plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base.
Bay Port always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .536. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Sheboygan South only posted an OBP of .167.
Bay Port's victory was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-7. Those home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for Ashwaubenon, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 8-12 record this season.
Ashwaubenon skirted past Bay Port 1-0 in their previous meeting on May 1st. Do the Jaguars have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Pirates turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
