Baseball Recap: Deep Run Takes a Loss

Deep Run dropped their record down to 9-3 on Friday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins. They fell just short of the Godwin Eagles by a score of 6-4. The Wildcats were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Eagles apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Parker Noonan was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and three unearned) runs off eight hits (and only one walk). He has been consistent recently: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Carson Strieffler made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI.

As for Godwin, they pushed their record up to 10-2 with the win, which was their ninth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.7 runs on average over those games.

On Godwin's side, Hayden Bynum looked comfortable as he pitched four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. The dominant performance also gave Bynum a new career-high in strikeouts (five).

On the hitting side, Godwin let Noah Namkoong and Alex Boyd run wild. Namkoong went 1-for-3 with one home run and two RBI, while Boyd went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Those two RBI gave Namkoong a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Matthew Hartsfield, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

Deep Run and Godwin should be looking forward to their upcoming games as both have a sizable advantage in the MaxPreps Virginia Rankings. The Wildcats (ranked 17th) will meet Cosby (ranked 71st) at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Deep Run 2.4, the Titans 4.1) so any runs scored will be well earned. Meanwhile, Godwin will face off against Maggie Walker at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank advantage (5 vs. 195).
