Weld Central hasn't had much luck against Valley recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Rebels are taking a road trip to challenge the Vikings at 11:00 a.m. Weld Central has given up an average of 7.5 runs per game this season, but Saturday's game will give them a chance to turn things around.
Weld Central is headed into Saturday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their third straight game on Tuesday. They came up short against University, falling 14-5.
Pierce Thoene made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run. Ross Phelps also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen base of the season.
Meanwhile, Valley posted their closest win since May 7, 2024 on Thursday. They had just enough and edged out Platte Valley 3-2.
Seth Kissler spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered two runs (both of which were unearned) on one hit and racked up seven Ks. He is becoming a predictor of Valley's success: when he allows at most two hits the team is 2-1 (and 8-10 when he doesn't).
On the hitting side, Alfonso Medina was excellent, going 3-for-4 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. He has become a key player for Valley: the team is undefeated when he posts at least three hits, but 6-11 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Trent Mestas, who went 2-for-3 with two runs.
Valley's victory bumped their record up to 10-11. As for Weld Central, their loss dropped their record down to 7-14.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Weld Central has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.9 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Valley struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 3.7 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Weld Central suffered a grim 9-3 defeat to Valley when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Rebels avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
