AAA District 5 recap Oct. 23, 2012
McMinn County extended the longest winning streak in AAA District 5 this week by beating Soddy Daisy, 44-6. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Bradley Central and Cleveland played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Bradley Central eventually emerging with a 16-14 victory.
Corbin Powers and Dre Sanders gave McMinn County a balanced attack through the air and ground last week. Powers threw for 152 yards and three touchdowns, while Sanders ran for 99 yards. Kelvin Wells Jr. also contributed to the rushing game with 90 yards on the ground.
Matt Abens was the best wideout in the league this week as the Trojans lost to Bo Cagle's team. Abens racked up two receptions for 55 yards. C.j. Brown helped Soddy Daisy's passing attack out by catching one ball for nine yards.
Soddy Daisy's Brett Standifer and Brown have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading AAA District 5 in both passing and receiving yards. Standifer has thrown for 1368 yards this season, while Brown, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 35 catches for 548 yards. The Cherokees' Wells Jr. leads the league in rushing yards with 1212.
McMinn County's Sanders is a mere 39 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. In 133 carries Sanders has accumulated 961 yard this year.
A big matchup in the league this week will be when the Cherokees take on Bradley Central. McMinn County is currently in first, while Damon Floyd's team is in third.
The Cherokees led the league in scoring this week after putting up 44 points on Kevin Orr's team. Powers ran for 48 yards in the win.
