Alto is 8-2 against Cushing since March of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Alto Yellowjackets will face off against the Cushing Bearkats at 6:30 p.m. Alto's hitters haven't had much luck over their past three games, but Thursday's match will give them a chance to turn things around.
Alto came up short against Mt. Enterprise on Tuesday, falling 19-1.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cushing). They were the clear victor by a 31-0 margin over New Summerfield on Tuesday. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Bearkats with their most commanding win of the season.
Stephen Tamez and Boe Coleman were a major factor no matter where they played. On the mound, Tamez tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Coleman tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Cushing is 2-1 when Coleman allowstwo or fewer hits, but 3-6 otherwise. At bat, Tamez scored three runs while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances, while Coleman scored four runs while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave Tamez a new career-high in RBI (three).
In other batting news, Kaden Willis was a standout: he went 3-for-4 with four runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jed Coleman, who went 2-for-5 with three runs, four RBI, and two doubles.
Cushing hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as New Summerfield struck out seven times.
The win made it two in a row for Cushing and bumps their season record up to 5-7. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.5 runs on average over those games. As for Alto, their loss dropped their record down to 4-9.
Alto took their victory against Cushing in their previous meeting back in April of 2023 by a conclusive 11-1. The rematch might be a little tougher for Alto since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
