Walker Valley proved they can win big last Friday (they won by 28) and on Friday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out the East Hamilton Hurricanes 40-37. Winning may never get old, but the Mustangs sure are getting used to it with their fifth in a row.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Walker Valley to victory, but perhaps none more so than Sawyer Boyd, who picked up 119 receiving yards and a pair of TDs. Boyd showed off some serious burst, connecting on a big catch for 51 yards. Cason Cunningham handled things on the ground, rushing for 153 yards and a rushing touchdown.
East Hamilton's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jaden Haywood, who picked up 168 receiving yards and three scores, and also rushed for 112 yards. Haywood's rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his fourth straight game with at least 112 rushing yards. Grayson Maddox did his part for the team as well, scoring a TD off of 108 receiving yards.
Walker Valley's win bumped their record up to 6-1. As for East Hamilton, their loss was their first of the season and also makes their record 6-1.
Walker Valley will get to enjoy the win for a while: their next game is against Lenoir City at 7:00 p.m. on the 17th. The Mustangs will be up against the Panthers' rather soft defense (which has allowed 44 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for East Hamilton, they have already played their next contest, a 35-14 victory against Ooltewah on the 10th.
