Shepherd had already proven themselves in the regular season and they didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over the Rusk Eagles on Saturday. Considering the Pirates have won 13 matchups by more than five runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
Isabelle Hooper made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out seven batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in 15 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run and one double.
In other batting news, Shepherd let Neveah Murphey and Skyleigh Lagow run wild. Murphey went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, five RBI, and two runs, while Lagow went 3-for-4 with one home run, three RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI Murphey has posted since back in March of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Adison Simpson, who went 2-for-3 with three runs, one double, and one RBI.
Shepherd is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a nice bump to their 26-10 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for Rusk, their loss dropped their record down to 18-14-1.
As of now, neither Shepherd nor the Eagles have any future games scheduled.
