The Manteo Redskins's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their ninth straight defeat. They lost to Currituck County on the road by a decisive 39-20 margin. While losing is never fun, Manteo can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 436th, while Currituck County is ranked 183rd).
Manteo's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was CC Lowe, who scored four points along with eight rebounds. Lowe is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as she's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games she's played. Jazmine Cooper was another key contributor, scoring five points along with 11 rebounds.
Currituck County's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Riley Parker led the charge by scoring eight points along with nine rebounds and three blocks. Parker hasn't dropped below nine rebounds for five straight games. Another player making a difference was Madison Leonard, who scored six points along with nine rebounds.
Manteo's defeat was their sixth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 4-12. Those losses could be blamed on the team's offensive performance across that stretch, as they only averaged 26.2 points per game. As for Currituck County, the victory makes it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 12-6.
Manteo will head out on the road to challenge Pasquotank County at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Manteo focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 29 on Friday. As for Currituck County, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Holmes at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
