Football Recap: Tayrone Thomas Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat Martin + How To Watch

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Lamar). They took down the Martin Warriors 40-21 on Thursday. The victory was all the more spectacular given the Vikings' disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas football rankings (they are ranked 330th, while the Warriors are ranked 135th).

Lamar got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Tayrone Thomas out in front who rushed for 200 yards and two TDs. With that strong performance, Thomas is now averaging an impressive 108.5 rushing yards per game. Jayden Shaw was another key passer, throwing for 265 yards and one touchdown while picking up 11.5 yards per attempt.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Lamar was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 289 rushing yards. That's the most rushing yards they've managed all season.

Lamar's defense stepped up as well, laying out the QB four times. Marquis Reis was especially locked on to Martin's QB and sacked him twice. Reis has been hot, having also posted seven or more total tackles the last five times he's played. Lamar got some further help from Braylon Williams: he made 12 total tackles (2.0 for loss).

Several Warriors players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Javian Jones-Priest, who rushed for 126 yards on only 13 carries. Daylon Cobb helped out on the ground, rushing for 84 yards.

The victory made it two in a row for Lamar and bumps their season record up to 2-2. Those wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 37.5 points over those games. As for Martin, their record is now 1-3.

Lamar has already played their next game, a 44-43 defeat against Haltom on the 26th. As for Martin, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 65-6 victory against Grand Prairie on the 26th.
