Coconino is 9-1 against Mingus since January of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Coconino Panthers will head out on the road to face off against the Mingus Marauders at 7:00 p.m. The teams are rolling into the game with opposing streaks: Coconino has struggled recently with three losses in a row, while Mingus will arrive with 11 straight wins.
Last Tuesday, Coconino came up short against Paradise Honors and fell 60-50.
Despite the loss, Coconino got a solid performance out of Aviana Scharfenberger, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten rebounds. Scharfenberger scored a full 30% of Coconino's points, the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. Shaylynn Billy was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with eight rebounds.
Meanwhile, Mingus didn't have too much trouble with Thunderbird at home on Monday as they won 55-37. Despite the win, that was the fewest points Mingus has scored all season.
Mingus found their leader in underclassman Savannah Tobias, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and 17 rebounds. The match was Tobias' eighth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Alice Kinsey, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 15 rebounds.
Coconino now has a losing record at 3-4. As for Mingus, they pushed their record up to 8-0 with that victory, which was their third straight at home.
Coconino didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Mingus in their previous meeting back in January, but they still walked away with a 51-47 win. Will Coconino repeat their success, or does Mingus have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
