St. Marys is 9-1 against Ritchie County since April of 2022 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. The Blue Devils will host the Rebels at 6:00 p.m. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.
St. Marys is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of West Virginia's top teams: Doddridge County, who was ranked sixth at the time (St. Marys was ranked 22nd). The Blue Devils came out on top in a nail-biter against the Bulldogs on Monday, sneaking past 3-2. The Blue Devils haven't had any issues with the Bulldogs recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Cali Masters spent all nine innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on three hits and racked up 19 Ks.
At the plate, Ella Bullman was incredible, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. Brylee McGrady was another key player, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Ritchie County hadn't done well against St. Marys recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Rebels' pitcher stepped up to hand the Blue Devils a 2-0 shutout. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Rebels have posted since April 8, 2024.
Not much got past Rocklyn Marcum, who gave up just three hits and racked up 12 Ks to keep St. Marys off the board. Marcum has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single earned run in four consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, Ritchie County saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Ava Satterfield, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Ritchie County pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.8 runs on average over those games. As for St. Marys, their win bumped their record up to 8-3.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. St. Marys hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .316. However, it's not like Ritchie County struggles in that department as they've averaged .315. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
St. Marys couldn't quite finish off Ritchie County in their previous matchup on Wednesday and fell 2-0. Will the Blue Devils have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other softball content.
