The Service Cougars will head out on the road to square off against the South Anchorage Wolverines at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday. Both teams are still undefeated (Service has 22 wins dating back to last season, while South Anchorage has 13 dating back to last season).
Service is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Alaska's top teams: Soldotna, who was ranked 11th at the time (Service was ranked second). The Cougars put the hurt on the Stars with a sharp 10-4 victory on Friday. Considering the Cougars have won six matchups by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.
The team relied heavily on Landon Martindale, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, two doubles, and two RBI. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in May of 2024. Another player making a difference was Sage Garsha, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base.
The home team had come away the winner the last four times South Anchorage and Wasilla had met, but sadly for the fans who attended this one that wasn't the case. The Wolverines were the clear victors by a 14-2 margin over the Warriors on Monday. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Wolverines considering their two-run performance the game before.
South Anchorage also got a great performance from David Feigner as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out nine over five innings pitched. Feigner has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in six consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Landon Gasser was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That double was his first of the season. Landon Drumm was another key player, going 1-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.
South Anchorage always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .588. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
South Anchorage pushed their record up to 13-0 with the win, which was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Service, their record now sits at 9-0.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Wednesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Service has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 6.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like South Anchorage struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Service skirted past South Anchorage 8-6 in their previous matchup back in May of 2024. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Wolverines have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
