The Spruce Mountain Phoenix will venture away from home to face off against the Dirigo Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Given that the two teams suffered a loss in their last games, they both have a little extra motivation heading into this contest.
Spruce Mountain fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against Maranacook on Friday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Black Bears by a score of 10-9.
Trent Lovewell was cooking despite his team's loss, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run. That run marked the first that he has scored this season. Another player making a difference was Eli Moffett, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Dirigo was not able to break out of their rough patch on Saturday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They came up short against Nokomis, falling 17-8.
Caiden Skidgell was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. On the mound, he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Skidgell was also big at the plate, going 2-for-5 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Skidgell wasn't the only one making solid contact as four players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Trevor Crosby, who went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. Crosby has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times he's played. Dominick Varnum was another, going 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Dirigo now has a losing record of 4-5. As for Spruce Mountain, their record is now 2-7.
Spruce Mountain came up short against Dirigo in their previous matchup last Friday, falling 9-6. Can the Phoenix avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
