Marcus Vigil made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out nine batters over six innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. Those nine strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. He has become a key player for Mora: the team is 4-2 when he posts at least two runs, but 4-13-1 otherwise.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Diego Atencio, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Mora is 3-1 when Atencio posts three or more RBI, but 5-14-1 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Phillip Trujillo, who went 1-for-4 with one triple, one run, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Penasco had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 5 runs) and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They came within a single run of losing the streak, but they secured an 11-10 W against the Rangers. The game was the first time the Panthers have beaten the Rangers on their field since April 17, 2024.
Andrew Archuleta was excellent, going a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. He has been hot recently, having posted three or more hits the last four times he's played. Another player making a difference was Alijah Vasquez, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double.
Penasco kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 4.9 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matchups they've averaged 13.
Penasco's victory bumped their record up to 10-13. As for Mora, their win bumped their record up to 8-15-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Mora has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 7.4 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Penasco struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
