The Westfield Shamrocks will take on the Cathedral Fighting Irish at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Westfield 2, Cathedral 3) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Westfield had been on a four-game streak of scoring at least ten runs, but Goodpasture Christian put an end to it on Saturday. The Shamrocks fell just short of the Cougars by a score of 2-1. The matchup marked the Shamrocks' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.
Luke Collinsworth was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out 11 over five innings pitched.
On the hitting side, Westfield saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Beck Jordan, who went 2-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Cathedral entered their game against Zionsville on Tuesday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. The Fighting Irish fell just short of the Eagles by a score of 7-5. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest loss the Fighting Irish have suffered since April 15, 2024.
Cathedral also got a good showing from Junior Belford, who pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits.
At the plate, Connor Christiansen was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Another player making a difference was Eli Bennett, who scored two runs and stole a base while going 1-for-3.
Cathedral's defeat dropped their record down to 6-2. As for Westfield, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 6-1.
Wednesday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Westfield has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .469. However, it's not like Cathedral struggles in that department as they've averaged .453. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Westfield skirted past Cathedral 6-5 when the teams last played back in April of 2023. Will the Shamrocks repeat their success, or do the Fighting Irish have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
