Sunflower recap November 13, 2013
Olathe East was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after topping Gardner-Edgerton. The Hawks came in at 18 in the state poll after placing at number 27 last week.
Adding to the longest winning streak in Sunflower this week, Lawrence Free State beat Shawnee Mission Northwest 40-14. The victory was the fifth in a row for the team.
Olathe East's offense was unstoppable this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Connor Leach threw for 62 yards and Branden Trinkle had 41 yards receiving. On the ground Jordan Brown chipped in 138 yards. Brown helped Olathe East's passing attack out by catching 1 ball for 10 yards.
Brown was a passing and rushing force as Jeff Meyers' team topped the Trailblazers. Brown's favorite target this week was Trinkle, who caught 2 passes for 41 yards.
Max McClellan made the biggest impact on defense this week as the Hawks beat Gardner-Edgerton. The 5-foot-11 junior nabbed 1 interception.
Leach put up the best numbers in passing as Olathe East defeated Marvin Diener's team.
The leading receiver in the league this season is Isaiah Ross. The Leavenworth star has 33 catches for 507 yards.
The most important game in the league this week will be the match up between the Hawks and East. Olathe East enters the game ranked 18th in the state, while the Lancers ranks 15th.
The Hawks' Brown is a mere 70 yards away from breaking the 1,000-rushing-yards mark for the season. In 176 carries Brown has put up 930 yards this year.
Lawrence was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from 11th to ninth in the league.
