Whitefield Academy is 0-5 against Fern Creek since April of 2015 but things could change on Thursday. Whitefield Academy couldn't beat Butler on Monday even though they stacked five runs on them in the fifth inning. The Wildcats took a 12-8 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bears.
McKenna Sims stepped up to lead a balanced group of hitters: she went 3-for-4 with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Gwynnie Franz also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen bases of the season.
Meanwhile, Fern Creek waltzed into their game on Tuesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They had just enough and edged out the Cougars 5-3. That's two games straight that the Tigers have won by exactly two runs.
Skylar Brown made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She tossed 5.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. What's more, she posted four strikeouts, the most she's had over her last six matchups. She was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double.
In other batting news, Lakelyn Maloney was excellent, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases and one run. Zariah St. Gerard was another key player, earning two runs and two stolen bases.
Whitefield Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 2-5. As for Fern Creek, their record now sits at 9-12.
Thursday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Whitefield Academy has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .454. However, it's not like Fern Creek struggles in that department as they've averaged .448. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Whitefield Academy might still be hurting after the 12-0 loss they got from Fern Creek when the teams last played back in April of 2024. Can the Wildcats avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
