Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for the Halifax Academy Vikings, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They took a 56-42 bruising from Rocky Mount Academy on Friday. Halifax Academy's loss signaled the end of their nine-game winning streak.
When it comes to explaining why Halifax Academy lost, one person who can't be blamed is Braxton Hammack. Despite the final result, he rushed for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Hammack is absolutely dominating the rushing yard category: he's posted at least 100 every time he's taken the field this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Austin Gaertner, who rushed for 46 yards and two touchdowns.
It was another big night for Marti Mcknight, who rushed for 176 yards and four touchdowns on only 14 carries. Gehrig Miller was another key contributor, throwing for 148 yards and three touchdowns while completing 75% of his passes.
Halifax Academy's defeat dropped their record down to 9-1. As for Rocky Mount Academy, the win (which was their tenth in a row) raised their record to 10-2.
Halifax Academy does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Rocky Mount Academy will face off against Wayne Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Wayne Christian knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with flashy point totals in its past six matches -- so hopefully Rocky Mount Academy likes a good challenge.
