Sanderson hasn't had much luck against Leesville Road recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Sanderson Spartans will look to defend their home court against the Leesville Road Pride at 6:00 p.m.
Sanderson is headed into Friday's contest looking for a big change in momentum after dropping their 17th straight game dating back to last season on Friday. They had to suffer through a 59-17 loss at the hands of Broughton. While losing is never fun, the Spartans can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 570th, while the Capitals are ranked 214th).
Despite the loss, Sanderson had strong showings from Stella Puckett, who posted seven points and four steals, and Devon Whitluck, who put up six points. Another player making a difference was Hannah Sayre, who had two points and five rebounds.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Leesville Road). They breezed by Cardinal Gibbons to the tune of 74-42 on Friday. With that win, the Pride brought their scoring average up to 50.7 points per game.
Sanderson better keep an eye on Molly Zuburg. She was instrumental in Leesville Road's win, going 5 for 10 on her way to 17 points along with five assists and three steals. That's the most points Zuburg has posted since back in February of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Finley Lewis, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 15 boards.
Leesville Road was working as a unit and finished the game with 20 assists. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Cardinal Gibbons only racked up two assists.
The victory was the third in a row for Leesville Road, bringing their record for this year to 9-4. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 57.7 points per game. As for Sanderson, their defeat dropped their record down to 0-13.
Sanderson was taken down by Leesville Road 65-36 in their previous meeting back in February of 2024. That game was all but decided by halftime, at which point Sanderson was down 38-16.
