In what's become a running theme this season, the St. Johns Redskins gave their fans yet another huge win on Tuesday. They put the hurt on Valley with a sharp 62-40 win. Given St. Johns' advantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 31st, while the Pirates are ranked 100th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Leading St. Johns to victory were Evelyn Andrus and Kayme Smith. Andrus dropped a double-double on 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Smith scored nine points along with seven steals and six rebounds. Smith hasn't dropped below two steals for nine straight games. Another player making a difference was Jaycee Willis, who scored eight points along with ten rebounds.
Several Pirates players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Netalia Sandoval, who scored nine points along with eight rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaelynn Nez, who scored 14 points along with four steals.
St. Johns is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last nine matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 21-5 record this season. As for Valley, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 11-8.
St. Johns will be playing at home against the Eagles at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Hopefully Pinon focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 33 on Thursday. As for Valley, they will head out on the road to take on the Bruins at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
