Sandwich is preparing for their first conference matchup of the season on Thursday. They will look to defend their home field against the Johnsburg Skyhawks at 4:30 p.m. The timing is sure in Sandwich's favor as the team sits on three straight wins at home while Johnsburg has been banged up by six consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season.
On Wednesday, Sandwich earned a 12-9 win over Yorkville Christian.
The team relied heavily on Coraline Stevens, who went 3-for-4 with one home run, five RBI, and two runs. Another player making a difference was Abigail Johnson, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Sandwich kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 11 hits in five consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Johnsburg hadn't done well against Richmond-Burton recently (they were 1-8 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Wednesday. The Skyhawks walked away with an 8-4 victory over the Rockets.
Brooke Wilkinson spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits.
At the plate, Kayla Riener was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, two runs, and one triple. She has been hot recently, having also posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. Evelyn Mercurio was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Johnsburg's first win this season bumped their record up to 1-4. As for Sandwich, their victory bumped their record up to 6-3.
Johnsburg's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Sandwich hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .319. It's a different story for Johnsburg, though, as they've only averaged .256. Will they be able to contain Sandwich's hitters?
Sandwich came out on top in a nail-biter against Johnsburg when the teams last played back in May of 2025, sneaking past 4-2. Do the Indians have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Skyhawks turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
