After a 16-loss
season,
Heavener
High School's softball team could have been pessimistic heading into
2013.
Instead, the Wolves are prolific.
The
team is off to an 8-1 start and last week went 6-1 to earn the MaxPreps
Oklahoma Team of the Week presented by the Oklahoma National
Guard.
Coached
by Rodale Sanders, Heavener outscored its seven opponents by a 45-20
count and after losing its first game of the season, 4-0 to Oktaha on
Saturday, the
Wolves responded with a 6-2 win over Wilburton on the very same day,
thanks to a
five-hitter tossed by
Lexi
Moody.
"Last year we had one senior and
two juniors and we started four
sophomores and two freshmen," said Sanders. "We won 15 games and lost 16
but learned
some things along the way."
Mattison
Place and
Cheyenne
Cranfield, both sophomores, had two hits apiece leading a
10-hit attack. Cranfield and
Jacee
Manley, yet another sophomore, added two RBIs
apiece.
For Moody it was her eighth win of the
season, tops in the state among those who keep statistics on
MaxPreps.com.
Moody has completed five of her nine
starts and owns a 1.78 ERA to go with 23 strikeouts and 39 runs allowed
in 51 innings.
Jodie
Hill,
another sophomore, leads the team in about every offensive category.
The shortstop is hitting .667 with 16 hits, 18 runs and 11 RBIs. She's
also stolen 28 bases in 29 attempts.
Other top
hitters include freshman
Azure
Watkins (.429), Manley at .391 with 10 RBIs and
Lily
Friedl
(.370). As a team, the Wolves are hitting .326 and averaging 7.0 runs
per game. They haven't allowed more than four runs in any
contest.
"This
summer we played a lot better and that gave them the confidence going
into this season that we could compete and win a lot more games," said
Sanders.
