New Deal and Floydada are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2020, but not for long. The New Deal Lions will head out on the road to square off against the Floydada Whirlwinds at 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, the two teams will really light up the scoreboard.
New Deal has not had quite the year their fans were hoping for to this point, but back-to-back wins may be a sign of good things to come. They enjoyed a cozy 75-61 victory over Lockney on Friday.
Floydada posted their biggest victory since December 1, 2023 on Friday. They blew past Sudan 80-43 on the road. Given Floydada's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 356th, while Sudan is ranked 887th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Braun Hobbs was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 31 points and 21 rebounds. He has been hot recently, having posted eight or more rebounds the last six times he's played. Another player making a difference was Aiden Trevino, who scored 13 points along with seven assists and three steals.
New Deal's victory bumped their record up to 6-17. As for Floydada, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 18-7 record this season.
New Deal ended up a good deal behind Floydada in their previous meeting back in December of 2023, losing 76-61. Can New Deal avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
