The Morgan Trojans will square off against the Logan Grizzlies at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Morgan is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.1 runs per game this season.
Morgan took a loss when they played away from home last Tuesday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the squad sidled past Grantsville 5-3.
Karson Black spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered three earned runs on eight hits and racked up seven Ks.
On the hitting side, Morgan saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kolby Kendell, who went 2-for-3 with two runs.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Logan). They never let Ben Lomond get on the board and left with a 14-0 victory on Tuesday. The win was a breath of fresh air for the Grizzlies as it put an end to their seven-game losing streak.
Marcus Shopbell and Zac Stuart made a big impact no matter where they played. On the mound, Shopbell struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Stuart kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out seven over four innings pitched. Shopbell also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Logan is 2-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 0-13 otherwise. At the plate, Shopbell went 2-for-3 with four stolen bases, four runs, and two RBI, while Stuart went 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Those four stolen bases gave Shopbell a new career-high.
In other batting news, Grayden Olsen and Kolt Redd did most of the damage at the plate: Olsen went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Redd went 2-for-5 with two stolen bases and three runs. Those three runs gave Redd a new career-high.
Logan always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their OBP total in five consecutive games.
Logan's victory was their first in the region, bumping their region record up to 1-3 and their overall record up to 2-14. As for Morgan, their win bumped their record up to 10-7.
Morgan beat Logan 7-4 in their previous matchup back in March. Do the Trojans have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Grizzlies turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
