Two dominant centers in Shaun Caldwell and Steve Boggs are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Roane County Raiders will head out on the road to face off against the Braxton County Eagles at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are closely ranked in West Virginia (Roane County is ranked 94th, while Braxton County is ranked 108th).
Roane County's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Saturday after their third straight loss. They lost to Independence on the road by a decisive 49-32 margin.
Braxton County has not had quite the year their fans were hoping for to this point, but back-to-back wins may be a sign of good things to come. They took down Gilmer County 60-44 on Friday. That's two games straight that Braxton County has won by exactly 16 points.
Braxton County's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Riley Hunt, who scored 18 points along with five rebounds and three steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Hunt has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Ryken Rutherford, who scored 17 points along with two steals.
Roane County has not been sharp recently as the team has lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 6-11 record this season. As for Braxton County, their victory bumped their record up to 6-12.
Roane County beat Braxton County 58-51 in their previous meeting back in January. The rematch might be a little tougher for Roane County since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
