The 3A boys soccer state championship game, scheduled for Tuesday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, was moved to Nov. 16 because of inclement weather. That means
The Classical Academy (Colorado Springs) and
St. Mary's (Colorado Springs) will have another week to see which of the Colorado Springs-area schools will have bragging rights in the city.
"They beat us 5-0 early in the season and we can't wait to show them who's boss," St. Mary's senior Evan Niebur said.
2. Big-school finals tonight: The boys soccer finals in 5A and 4A are expected to be played tonight at Dick's (Monday has been mentioned as a potential make-up date if more desultory weather rolls through). In 5A, top-seeded
Mountain Vista (Highlands Ranch) (18-0) will aim to keep its unbeaten season intact against
Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village) (15-1-3).
Air Academy (US Air Force Academy) (18-1) will take on
Broomfield (13-1-4) in 4A. For Broomfield, it marks the seventh appearance in the title game in 14 seasons under coach Jim Davidson.
TOP PERFORMER* Peter Tonsits, The Classical Academy: The sophomore's overtime goal
put the Titans in the 3A title game while eliminating Colorado Springs
Christian in the process. C.S.C.S entered 18-0 and had beaten TCA 1-0.
"It was so crazy," Tonsits said of the perfectly placed 20-yard shot.
"I'll never be able to do that again."
