Highland has won six straight games at home, while Lyons has won six straight on the road, but those streaks won't matter much on Saturday. The Huskies will welcome the Lions at 10:00 a.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
On Friday, Highland made easy work of Sedgwick County and carried off a 16-1 victory.
Sawyer Morgan was a standout: he got on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. He continues to improve, besting his previous run total in each of the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was DJ Rogers, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base.
Highland hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, Lyons got the win against Denver Academy on Thursday by a conclusive 17-2. The win continues a trend for the Lions in their matchups with the Mustangs: they've now won four in a row.
Wyatt Fitzgerald made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He also tossed a walk, which is notable because Lyons is 3-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 5-7 otherwise. Fitzgerald was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those two RBI gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Jake LaCrosse was incredible, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs, one double, and one RBI. He has become a key player for Lyons: the team is 6-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 2-7 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Leo Irvin, who went 2-for-3 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Highland has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-5-1 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.6 runs on average over those games. As for Lyons, the win got them back to even at 8-8.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Saturday as neither team is afraid to steal. Highland has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Lyons struggles in that department as they've been averaging an even more impressive 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Highland skirted past Lyons 12-11 in their previous meeting back in April of 2022. Do the Huskies have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Lions turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
