For much of Saturday’s Missouri Class 5 boys state basketball championship, Oakville (St. Louis) looked the part of champions. Then Hillcrest (Springfield) standout Dorial Green stepped up his game, and rallied the Hornets to a 54-49 win.
The 6-foot-5 sophomore scored 10 of his 21 points over the final 4-minutes, 17-seconds of the fourth quarter as the Hornets went on a 15-2 run to seal the triumph. Green also pulled down 13 rebounds in the contest.
Hillcrest (25-7) senior guard Trey Starks, the tournament’s leading scorer, posted a game-high 22 points on six-of –15 shooting from the field as the Hornets ruined Oakville’s 17-game winning streak. Isaac Sade added 10 points to the Hornet’s 13th straight win.
On back-to-back defensive stands, Green swatted Oakville (27-5) shots allowing the Hornets to turn a 44-40 deficit into a 45-44 advantage with 1:28 remaining in the contest. Green’s first rejection led to a Taylor Sade lay-up and a free throw after he was fouled.
After blocking a shot on Oakville’s next possession, Green scored on a put back to start a run in which he scored eight straight points.
“I thought their two kids that could score, Starks and Green, just had monster games against us,” Oakville coach Nick Traxler told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “They are just really good players and they did the things they needed to do in those last three minutes to win.”
Toraino Hellem led the way for Oakville, who finished fourth at last year’s Show-Me Showdown II, with 19 points. Garrett Reeg added nine points, six rebounds and three blocked shots, while Javier Duren chipped in nine points.
Class 4 Boys Championship – Kearney 47, St. Francis Borgia 43
With Saturday’s 47-43 win over defending champion St. Francis Borgia (30-1), Kearney put the skids on the Knights’ 46-game winning streak and got a little pay back all at the same time.
The Bulldogs fell to Borgia in the 2009 Class 4 title game by double-digits, but Saturday the Bulldogs employed a rugged 2-3 zone defense that shut down the Knight’s potent outside game, holding the defending champions to 6-of-20 shooting from behind the 3-point arc.
The Bulldogs (28-3), who became the first school since 2004 to win both the boys basketball and football state titles in the same school year, connected on a pair of 3-pointers to open the second half. Following Dillon Starzl’s lay-up, Kearney turned a 27-20 halftime deficit into a 28-27 advantage.
Starzl led all scorers for Kearney with 20 points and he had eight rebounds in the title contest. Grant Cozad added 10 points. Nathan Scheer and Ben Ruether scored 17 and 11 points respectively for the Knights.
Class 5 Girls Championship – Incarnate Word Academy 52, Blue Springs 43
For the second consecutive year the Blue Springs (26-4) girls were turned away from the school’s first state championship in basketball following a 52-43 loss to top-ranked Incarnate Word Academy Saturday.
After holding on to a 33-31 advantage at the conclusion of the third quarter, the Red Knights (30-1) broke open a tight contest in the final quarter building a 47-38 advantage late in the game.
Brianna Puni scored a team-high 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Red Knights. Brittany Carter added 12 points. Cherisse Burris led the way for Blue Springs with 16 points and eight rebounds. Tyonna Snow and Azia Washington added eight points each.

Hailey Roderique led Webb City (30-1) with 18 points, five rebounds and four steals in the Class 4 girls title game as the Cardinals posted a 60-53 win over Notre Dame-Cape Girardeau.
Also in double-figures for the Cardinal were Breanna Baker and Kaitlin Jaeger with 14 and 13 points respectively. Kyndal Clark added 11 points for Webb City. Allyson Bradshaw and Jane Morrill led Notre Dame-Cape Girardeau (26-5) with 18 and 16 points respectively.
