The St. Thomas More Cougars put another one in the bag on Friday to keep their perfect season alive. They came out on top against Westgate by a score of 31-21. Given St. Thomas More's advantage in MaxPreps' Louisiana football rankings (they are ranked second, while Westgate is ranked 46th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead St. Thomas More to victory, but perhaps none more so than Sam Altmann, who threw for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Hutch Swilley was another key contributor, rushing for 61 yards and a touchdown.
St. Thomas More's win was their fourth straight on the road, which bumped their overall record up to 9-0. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-9 Comeaux and 3-6 Denham Springs (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 36.1% over those games). As for Westgate, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 5-4.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. St. Thomas More will challenge Lafayette Christian Academy at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. One thing working in Lafayette Christian Academy's favor is that they have now posted big point totals in their last five contests. As for Westgate, they will head out on the road to face off against Northside at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
