The Altavista Colonels are taking a road trip to take on the William Campbell Generals at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.
Altavista is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Thursday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Cumberland, sneaking past 4-2. The victory was some much needed relief for the Colonels as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask William Campbell). They were the clear victors by a 23-0 margin over Sussex Central on Thursday. Considering the Generals have won seven contests by more than five runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Peighton Francis and Estella Short made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Francis struck out nine batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Meanwhile, Short struck out six batters over two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and only one walk). Francis has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. At the plate, Francis went a perfect 4-for-4 with three runs and three doubles, while Short went 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI. That's the most runs Francis has posted since back in April.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Arnesia Dews, who fired off two home runs, seven RBI, and one double while going 3-for-4. Those two home runs gave her a new career-high. Kersie Elder was another key player, going 3-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI.
William Campbell kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 29 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in three consecutive games.
William Campbell has been performing well recently as they've won eight of their last ten matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-9 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.6 runs over those games. As for Altavista, their record is now 7-14.
Altavista came up short against William Campbell in their previous matchup on May 2nd, falling 7-2. Can the Colonels avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
