Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Nevaeh Staples and Naimah Al-Arif Lead Uwharrie Charter Academy to Victory

Uwharrie Charter Academy won the last time they faced Asheboro and things went their way on Wednesday too. The Uwharrie Charter Academy Eagles came out on top against the Asheboro Blue Comets by a score of 36-26. Given the Eagles' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 100th, while the Blue Comets are ranked 299th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Uwharrie Charter Academy was led to victory by Naimah Al-Arif and Nevaeh Staples. Al-Arif posted 14 points in addition to eight boards and four steals, while Staples went 5 of 12 on her way to 11 points along with six rebounds and three blocks. Staples is on a roll when it comes to blocks, as she's now posted two or more in the last seven games she's played.

Despite the defeat, Asheboro saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Adalynn Scherer dropped a double-double on 13 points and 15 boards. The dominant performance gave Scherer a new career-high in rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Mackenzie Cass, who had seven points.

Uwharrie Charter Academy's victory was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 7-2. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 50.6 points per game. As for Asheboro, they are on a five-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-4.

Uwharrie Charter Academy didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 63-10 win against River Mill on the 6th. As for Asheboro, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next contest, a 65-22 loss against Southwestern Randolph on the 6th.
