Even though the Downey Knights scored an imposing 59 points on Friday, the Gregori Jaguars still came out on top. Gregori sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 62-59 victory over Downey. For Gregori, this counts as revenge for the 65-61 loss Downey walked away with the last time they faced one another on January 10th.
Gregori was led to victory by Kaleb Smith and Jayson Powers. Smith scored 16 points along with five steals, while Powers dropped a double-double on 27 points and ten rebounds. Smith continues to roll, besting his previous point total in each of the last four games he's played. Dru Shafer was another key contributor, scoring 11 points.
Several Knights players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Collin Eden, who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Eden has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Reuben Lewis, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds.
Gregori now has a winning record of 12-11. As for Downey, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost three of their last four matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-15 record this season.
Gregori will be playing at home against Edison at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Edison has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 372 points over their last five games. As for Downey, they won't have much time to rest: their next matchup is against Central Catholic at 4:00 p.m. on January 27th. Central Catholic will be looking to keep their seven-game home win streak alive.
