Lowell is a perfect 7-0 against Merrillville since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Red Devils will look to defend their home field against the Pirates at 10:00 a.m. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Lowell has three straight victories, Merrillville has three straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
On Thursday, Lowell got the win against Hobart by a conclusive 8-2. The Red Devils might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won four games by six runs or more this season.
The team relied heavily on Preslee Hill, who went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Isabella Baron, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run.
Lowell hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least five batters in four consecutive matchups.
Meanwhile, Merrillville fell victim to Wheeler and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They lost 11-0 to the Bearcats.
Merrillville saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Elani Alvarez, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one double.
Lowell's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-4. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Merrillville, their loss dropped their record down to 1-12.
Merrillville's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Saturday. Lowell has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.8 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Merrillville, though, as they've been averaging only 1.7 strikeouts. Will Lowell keep running through batters, or will the Pirates buck the trend?
Everything went Lowell's way against Merrillville in their previous meeting back in April of 2024, as Lowell made off with an 11-0 win. Will the Red Devils repeat their success, or do the Pirates have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
