The Ocracoke Dolphins's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their eighth straight defeat. They took a serious blow against Columbia, falling 59-24. Ocracoke has not had much luck with Columbia recently, as the team's come up short the last three times they've met.
Despite the loss, Ocracoke saw an underclassman step up: Jami Martinez scored 16 points. That was a full 66.7% of Ocracoke's points, marking the fourth time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points.
It was another big night for Shetana Spencer, who dropped a double-double on 22 points and 13 rebounds for Columbia. Spencer hasn't dropped below two steals for 12 straight games. The team also got some help courtesy of Zyona Melton, who dropped a double-double on ten points and 15 rebounds.
Ocracoke's loss was their eighth straight at home, which dropped their record down to 1-14. As for Columbia, their victory bumped their record up to 4-12.
Ocracoke will be playing at home against Washington Montessori at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Washington Montessori comes in on a streak of failing to score more than 15 points in their last eight games, a trend the team is of course eager to reverse. As for Columbia, they will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Mattamuskeet at 6:00 p.m. on February 13th.
