The Newport Wildcats waltzed into their matchup on Sunday with 12 straight wins but they left with 13. They walked away with a 69-62 victory over Evangel Christian. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Newport to victory, but perhaps none more so than Jabari Covington, who scored 22 points along with six rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Covington has scored all season. James Turner was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Newport is on a roll lately: they've won 14 of their last 15 matches, which provided a nice bump to their 21-3 record this season. As for Evangel Christian, their defeat dropped their record down to 14-4.
Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Newport will take on Bellevue at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Bellevue will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Kentucky Rankings (they are ranked 191st, while Newport is ranked sixth). As for Evangel Christian, they will be playing at home against Madison Central at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
