Carbondale has gone a perfect 6-0 against Goreville recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Monday. The Terriers will take on the Blackcats at 4:30 p.m.
Things were looking good for Carbondale after they put the first run on the board on Thursday, but unfortunately for them things went downhill from there. They fell 10-7 to Murphysboro. The Terriers have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Kaelyn Viernum made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one home run and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Jasmine Martin, who went 2-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Goreville let Woodlawn stack six runs on them in the second inning on Thursday but luckily Goreville prevailed anyway. The Blackcats won by a run and slipped past the Cardinals 9-8. The Blackcats haven't had any issues with the Cardinals recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.
Lydia Kwiatkowski was a major factor no matter where she played. She pitched five innings while giving up just one earned run off five hits. What's more, she posted three strikeouts, the most she's had over her last six matchups. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Goreville let Elisabeth Trainor and Addyson (Addy) Underwood run wild. Trainor went 3-for-5 with three RBI, two doubles, and one run, while Underwood went 2-for-3 with one triple, one stolen base, and two RBI. That's the most RBI Trainor has posted since back in March. Emma Rogers was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two runs.
Carbondale's loss dropped their record down to 8-12. As for Goreville, their record now sits at 12-16.
Monday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Carbondale hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .312. However, it's not like Goreville struggles in that department as they've averaged .322. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Carbondale's way against Goreville in their previous meeting two weeks ago, as Carbondale made off with an 11-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Terriers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
