Legacy is 0-4 against Garfield since September of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Legacy Tigers will head out on the road to face off against the Garfield Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. Legacy will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps California Rankings (they are ranked 648th, while Garfield is ranked 230th).
Legacy unfortunately witnessed the end of their seven-game winning streak two weeks ago. They took a serious blow against Huntington Park, falling 42-14.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Moises Muro, who rushed for 93 yards on only six carries, and also caught a touchdown.
Meanwhile, a well-balanced attack led Garfield over South East in every quarter on their way to victory on Friday. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that Garfield blew South East out of the water with a 69-0 final score. The result was nothing new for Garfield, who have now won seven contests by 21 points or more so far this season.
Among those leading the charge was Jayden Barnes, who picked up 117 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and also punched in a touchdown on the ground. Paul Ramos also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
With Legacy's defeat and Garfield's victory, both teams now sport identical 7-1 records.
Friday's matchup will pit two of the most dominant backs against one another: Matthew Castillo and Damian Cornejo. Castillo has put up some stellar numbers this year, and currently owns excellent season averages of 229.5 rushing yards per game this season. For his part, Cornejo has averaged 111.6 rushing yards per game this season.
Legacy was taken down by Garfield 70-7 in their previous meeting back in October of 2022. Can Legacy avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
