Dirigo is 1-7 against Winthrop since May of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Wednesday. The Cougars will welcome the Ramblers at 4:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
As a matter of fact, Dirigo put up the most runs they have all season on Monday. They came out on top against Hall-Dale by a score of 10-6. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Cougars.
Kaeden Swan was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Swan was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
In other batting news, Caiden Skidgell was incredible, going 2-for-3 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That double marked the first that he has hit this season. Dominick Varnum was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs.
Meanwhile, while Winthrop put up plenty of runs on Monday, the same can't be said for Madison. The Ramblers blew past the Bulldogs 14-0. That 14 run margin sets a new team best for the Ramblers this season.
Like Dirigo, Winthrop also got a great game from a two-way player: Trent Collin. He looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out 11 over five innings pitched. Collin has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than eight strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with five RBI and one run.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Jaxon August, who went 1-for-3 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Brody Adams, who got on base in all three of his plate appearances with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
The victory got Dirigo back to even at 2-2. As for Winthrop, their win bumped their record up to 4-1.
The batters for both teams will have to hit smart on Wednesday as both have some strikeout artists on the roster. Dirigo has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 11.5 strikeouts per game. However, it's not like Winthrop struggles in that department as they've been averaging 8.8 strikeouts. Considering how easily both teams rack up Ks, the hitters on both teams better bring their A-game into this one.
Dirigo suffered a grim 13-0 defeat to Winthrop in their previous meeting back in May of 2024. Will the Cougars have more luck at home instead of on the road? Check MaxPreps after the match for a full breakdown of the game, commentary, and other baseball content.
