Basketball Recap: Modoc Comes Up Short

Modoc lost against Weed back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Modoc Braves took an 81-62 bruising from the Weed Cougars. While losing is never fun, the Braves can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 847th, while the Cougars are ranked 385th).

When it comes to explaining why Modoc lost, don't look at Nate Gallardo. Despite the final result, he went 8 of 16 en route to 22 points. Those 22 points gave Gallardo a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Chris Guasp, who posted 11 points along with six rebounds and five assists.

It was another big night for Marcus Horton, who went 11 for 16 on his way to 27 points and five assists for Weed. Jett Marshall also deserves some recognition as he posted his first blocks of the season.

This is the second loss in a row for Modoc and nudges their season record down to 11-10. As for Weed, the victory (which was their eighth in a row) raised their record to 14-6.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Modoc will square off against Etna at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Weed, they will take on Trinity at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Trinity is on a three-game streak of home wins, Weed a ten-game streak of away wins (dating back to last season)-- so someone will have to leave a streak behind on the court.
