Newport is 0-10 against Freeman since January of 2018 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. Having just played yesterday, the Newport Grizzlies will get right back to it and host the Freeman Scotties at 5:45 p.m. on January 26th. The two teams have had a bumpy ride up to this point with 28 consecutive losses for Newport and three for Freeman.
Newport suffered their biggest loss since January 3rd on Thursday. They were outmatched by Priest River at home and fell 60-28. While losing is never fun, Newport can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 311th in Washington, while Priest River is ranked 95th in Idaho).
Meanwhile, things could have been worse for Freeman, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 56-39 loss to Deer Park on Tuesday. Freeman has struggled against Deer Park recently, as their contest on Tuesday was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.
Even though the team lost, they still had their share of impressive performances. One of the most dominant came from Taylee Phelps, who scored 15 points along with five rebounds. That was a full 38.5% of Freeman's points, marking the third time in a row she's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Avery Boswell, who scored six points along with six rebounds.
Newport dropped their record down to 0-15 with that loss, which was their 14th straight at home. As for Freeman, they now have a losing record at 8-9.
Newport was taken down by Freeman 74-24 in their previous matchup on January 6th. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Phelps, who scored 34 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Now that Newport knows the damage she can cause, will they be able to stop her this time? There's only one way to find out.
