Baseball Game Preview: Spearville Lancers vs. Holcomb Longhorns

Spearville is 1-8 against Holcomb since April of 2015 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Monday. The Lancers will take on the Longhorns.

Spearville is headed into the game having just suffered their closest defeat since May 2, 2024 on Thursday. They fell just short of Cimarron by a score of 5-3. The matchup marked the Lancers' lowest-scoring contest so far this season.

Danny Alcala was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. He is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as he's now snagged at least one in each of the last three games he's played. Cooper Thompson also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Meanwhile, Holcomb had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 11.3 runs) and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They blew past the Mustangs 20-9. The Longhorns might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won nine games by six runs or more this season.

Davin Hernandez was a standout: he got on base in four of his five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one RBI. That's the most stolen bases he has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Korbin Johnson, who got on base in all five of his plate appearances with three runs and two RBI.

Holcomb always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .643. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

This is the second loss in a row for Spearville and nudges their season record down to 9-3. Even worse, they were so close both times: the losses came by an average of only 1.5 runs. As for Holcomb, they pushed their record up to 11-3 with the win, which was their fourth straight on the road.

Spearville might still be hurting after the 18-4 defeat they got from Holcomb in their previous matchup back in April of 2024. Can the Lancers avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
