The Illiana Christian Vikings are taking a road trip to face off against the Lowell Red Devils at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Illiana Christian is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 11.6 runs per game this season.
Illiana Christian proved they can win big on Tuesday (they won by 31) and on Thursday they proved they can win the close ones too. Their pitchers stepped up to hand Hobart a 1-0 shutout. Winning may never get old, but the Vikings sure are getting used to it with their third in a row.
Illiana Christian's victory was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Jake Scott, who went 1-for-2 with one double. That double was Scott's first of the season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Lowell). They were the clear victors by a 12-0 margin over Griffith on Thursday. The Red Devils not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since May 6, 2024 (when they won 19-0).
Ryan Wellwerts was incredible, going 1-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024. Gavin Gutierrez was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two stolen bases and two runs.
Lowell always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .541. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Griffith only posted an OBP of .238.
Illiana Christian pushed their record up to 4-1 with the win, which was their eighth straight at home dating back to last season. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.3 runs on average over those games. As for Lowell, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Lowell's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Illiana Christian hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .364. It's a different story for Lowell, though, as they've only averaged .239. Will they be able to contain Illiana Christian's hitters?
Illiana Christian took their win against Lowell when the teams last played back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Vikings since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
