Basketball Game Preview: Robertson Cardinals vs. St. Michael's Horsemen

Robertson and St. Michael are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2022, but not for long. The Robertson Cardinals will host the St. Michael's Horsemen at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

St. Michael's will be up against a hot Robertson team: the squad just extended their winning streak to 17. Robertson simply couldn't be stopped on Tuesday as they easily beat Academy for Technology and The Classics 97-61. Given the Cardinals' advantage in MaxPreps' New Mexico basketball rankings (they are ranked ninth, while Academy for Technology and The Classics are ranked 105th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Robertson can attribute much of their success to George Smith, who went 11 of 15 on his way to 27 points, and Jesse James Gonzales, who went 12 for 17 en route to 27 points. That's the most points Gonzales has posted since back in December of 2024. Nathaniel Gonzales was another key player, putting up nine points along with seven boards and five assists.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask St. Michael's). They breezed by West Las Vegas to the tune of 88-51 on Tuesday. With the Horsemen ahead 45-23 at the half, the match was all but over already.

Robertson's win was their 17th straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 17-2. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 74.5 points per game. As for St. Michael's, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won ten of their last 11 games, which provided a nice bump to their 15-4 record this season.

Robertson didn't have too much breathing room in their contest against St. Michael's in their previous meeting back in February of 2024, but they still walked away with a 67-63 victory. Will Robertson repeat their success, or does St. Michael's have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
